Carnation – The pattern was first woven for upholstery and garments in the Turkish city of Bursa to compete with similar textiles woven in Venice and Florence. It was produced during the reign of the Ottoman dynasty, which sought to challenge Italian dominance in the international textile market. The design is based on a pattern similar to those found on Italian velvets. However, Turkish weavers adapted individual elements to give the pattern a more 'Ottoman' appearance. The dominant floral motif is a stylized, fan-shaped carnation, one of the most typical patterns in Ottoman textiles.
